La Revue, Calder in France, N°1 2015
This issue of La Revue explores Alexander Calder's significant time in France, focusing on his formative years in Paris from 1926 to 1933, when he made his mark on the avant-garde scene. Following the war, Calder returned to Paris in 1946, later spent time in Aix-en-Provence in 1953, and designed his final monumental studio in Saché in 1963. The Revue features archival documentation of the studios where Calder lived and worked, providing insight into his artistic practice in these locations.
"Calder in France" also honors the legacy of his Saché studio, which has hosted a residency program for contemporary artists for over 25 years. Fifty artists, including Martin Puryear, Tara Donovan, Ernesto Neto, and Sarah Sze, have worked there. This issue includes interviews with Tadashi Kawamata, Abraham Cruzvillegas, and Rachel Harrison, alongside a selection of images showcasing past residents' work, and a special portfolio of models for new sculptures by the 2014 resident Monika Sosnowska. Additionally, seminal texts from Alexander S. C. Rower, Calder’s grandson and president of the Calder Foundation, and Susan Braeuer Dam, Director of Research and Publications at the Calder Foundation, are featured.
