La Revue, Arthur Jafa, 2020, Limited Edition
The American contemporary artist Arthur Jafa curated this special edition of Cahiers d'Art Revue. In this issue, Jafa invites artists Mark Leckey, Dana Hoey, Torkwase Dyson, Frida Orupabo, and Rashaad Newsome for in-depth conversations about their artistic practices, race, and digital culture.
This edition also features excerpts from Jafa’s notebooks, which he has kept since the 1990s, as well as texts by Man Ray and Saidiya Hartman, Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University. Included is the short story Milk of Paradise by new wave science fiction author James Tiptree Jr.
A special edition of 80 copies includes MJ (2018), Jafa’s portrait of Michael Jackson, a 2021 digital print on Canson Baryta paper measuring 22.5 x 24.5 cm. The print is part of an edition of 80 + 10AP and is presented alongside the publication in a custom cloth-bound box measuring 33.7 x 24.4 x 3.7 cm.
Curated by Jafa, winner of the 2019 Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale, this revue also pays tribute to Michael Jackson with a striking cover and Jafa’s deeply moving text, Aporias and Radiance, reflecting on Jackson’s voice. The issue includes works and writings that may be considered provocative, and reader discretion is advised.
